Donald Trump said this week that the United States had received what he described as a “very big” and valuable “present” from Iran, even as tensions between the two countries remain high.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Trump pointed to what he framed as a positive development in ongoing discussions.
“They’re gonna make a deal. They did something yesterday that was amazing, actually. They gave us a present, and the present arrived today. It was a very big present, worth a tremendous amount of money.”
He did not clarify exactly what he meant by the “present,” but suggested it was connected to oil and gas and linked to activity around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically critical waterway for global energy supply.
“I’m not going to tell you what that present is, but it was a very significant prize, and they gave it to us.”
Trump indicated that he interpreted the move as a sign of progress in communication with Iranian officials.
“That meant one thing to me. We’re dealing with the right people.”
During the same briefing, he also claimed that Iran had agreed it would “never have a nuclear weapon,” presenting this as another indication that talks were moving in a favorable direction.
At the same time, Trump suggested that the United States currently holds a strong position in the region.
“If you read the papers, you’d think we’re tied, you’d think we’re in a tough battle. We are roaming free over Tehran. We can do whatever we want.”
However, Iranian officials have publicly rejected these claims. A spokesperson for the country’s military leadership stated that operations would continue “until complete victory,” and previous remarks from Tehran have dismissed Trump’s assertions about negotiations as “fake news.”
Earlier in the week, Trump announced that planned U.S. military strikes against Iranian infrastructure had been temporarily paused following what he described as constructive discussions.
In a post on Truth Social, he wrote:
“BASED ON THE TENOR AND TONE OF THESE IN DEPTH, DETAILED, AND CONSTRUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS… I HAVE INSTRUCTED THE DEPARTMENT OF WAR TO POSTPONE ANY AND ALL MILITARY STRIKES… FOR A FIVE DAY PERIOD, SUBJECT TO THE SUCCESS OF THE ONGOING MEETINGS AND DISCUSSIONS.”
Despite these statements, the situation remains unclear, with both sides offering sharply different accounts of current developments. While Trump has emphasized progress and potential agreements, Iranian responses suggest a far more cautious—or contradictory—reality, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing tensions.
“I AM PLEASED TO REPORT THAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND THE COUNTRY OF IRAN, HAVE HAD, OVER THE LAST TWO DAYS, VERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS REGARDING A COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION OF OUR HOSTILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST.”
He added that, based on the tone of those talks, he had instructed officials to delay further military action for a limited period.
